While several "pre-season" parades have become quite grand in scale, local parish ordinances dictate that the New Orleans Mardi Gras parade season officially begin on the second Friday before Fat Tuesday. During the 12-day period leading up to Mardi Gras, nearly 70 parades are held in the four-parish area of Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard and St. Tammany.

Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad & Tobago’s Carnival is known the world over for its unique display of creativity in the form of costume, song, dance and steelband music.

Each Carnival, Trinidad and Tobago launches itself into the biggest outpouring of energy and creativity and invites the world to witness its masterpiece. Carnival is not a parade. To know it as this is to know it at its least. You don’t just stand on the side and watch it go by. You see it, hear it, smell it, taste it, breathe it and live it. For months before Carnival Monday and Tuesday, preparations get underway. For some people this is all that seems to matter. This is their expression of life.

Belgium

Everybody knows it. Aalst is THE CITY in Belgium for Carnival lovers. The three days before Ash Wednesday, everybody has fun, dressed in rags and whatever there is available at the moment. On Sunday there is a big parade held, with more than eighty different groups.

The first modern carnival parade took place in 1923, initiated by the tradespeople of the city. Since then the city of Aalst became the main organizer of Mardi Gras in Flanders.
